When most people need to communicate or present, they think first about the information they want to get across. We’ve all experienced this. We are sitting in front of a presenter or a professional listening to the person drone on - starting to think that poking ourselves in the eye might be less painful than continuing to listen. On the other hand, when a successful communicator starts the same task, they first chart out what their audience feels at the start.
It seems surprising, but the audience is often the most overlooked element of presenting or communicating. But, the audience is the most critical. We humans can only process a handful of the 11 millions pieces of input showered upon us every moment.
That means our brains constantly seek focus by asking, “What does this mean for me?” If our brain does not find enough relevance from the speaker, it will keep looking in other places. In other words, we tune out the speaker as our brain searches for focus. For the person speaking, this means whatever is grabbing the audience’s attention- well, it’s not you.
So, if you are presenting information to your patient, their family, your team or maybe to a larger audience like a community group, start by sharing a narrative that gives the audience a personal stake in the facts to follow.
Keep this in mind when communicating, wether it be to a single patient or a large audience.
